Title Research Methods Seminar: Nonparametric Statistics: Foundations, Exact Tests, and Applications in R
Description The seminar deals with nonparametric tests, which are often used for small sample sizes and when assumptions of parametric procedures are not met. A special focus is on the use of exact test procedures and the respective randomization concepts, as well as on the handling of tied ranks. The following methods will be discussed with respect to their statistical foundations as well as their applications in R:

A) Frequency tests: binomial test, multinomial test, chi-square tests for different data situations, Fisher's exact test, McNemar test, Cochran's Q

B) Methods for comparing groups:
1) for independent groups: Wilcoxon rank sum test, Kruskal-Wallis test, special rank contrast procedures, Kolmogorov-Smirnov two sample test
2) for connected groups: sign test, Wilcoxon signed rank test, Friedman test

C) Measures of association for ordinal data: Kendall's S (and its standardizations).

The seminar combines lecture-like parts with exercise parts (by hand and with R). In addition to using existing packages, hands-on programming of R functions for selected (exact) tests will be demonstrated.
