Title Nonordinary consciousness in cross-cultural perspective
Description Nonordinary consciousness (NC) is a state of waking consciousness that basically differs from everyday waking consciousness in terms of cognition (perception and thought), affect (emotion and mood), and volition. NC may be 1) psychologically/psychosomatically induced (e.g., advanced meditation, sensory deprivation, rhythm-induced trance), or 2) pharmacologically induced (e.g., psychedelics, dissociatives, empathogens/entactogens), or 3) may occur spontaneously in some individuals. Two trademarks of NC are visions/hallucinations (e.g., seeing things no-one else sees) and strong changes in the sense of self (e.g, subjective experiences of the transcendence of the self-world dichotomy or of being “another self”). Overall, scientific research on NC is largely undertaken in Western contexts. In this course we will examine what can be gained by looking at NC from Western and additionally also from Non-Western perspectives. We will apply this NC cross-cultural perspective to the following four topics: 1) pharmacologically induced NC (with the example of psychedelics), 2) psychologically/psychosomatically induced NC (with the example of advanced meditation), 3) spontaneously occurring non-pathological vs. pathological voice hearing, and 4) spontaneously occurring non-pathological vs. pathological dissociation/possession.

In the first sessions of the proseminar, the lecturer will provide an introduction to the research foundations of the psychological science of nonordinary consciousness. In the sessions following the introduction, in the first hour students will give presentations (talks) with interactive elements on nonordinary-consciousness studies that include cross-cultural perspectives. In the second hour (after the student presentations), the topics of the presentations will be deepened further (also including further short inputs by the lecturer). In the last sessions, the proseminar will be concluded with an integrative summary of the state of the art of cross-cultural research on nonordinary consciousness, as well as with the identification of the research frontiers that must be addressed to expand the cross-cultural nonordinary-consciousness science of tomorrow.
