Title Approaches to Culture
Description “Culture” is one of the most multivalent concepts in sociology. This includes understandings of culture as values, norms, tastes, symbols, schemes, and practices. The aim of this course is to gain a breadth of knowledge of different approaches to culture. To achieve this, we will survey works from Talcott Parsons, Clifford Geertz, Pierre Bourdieu, William Sewell, Jeffrey Alexander, Ann Swidler, Claudia Strauss and Naomi Quinn.

Requirements:
Willingness to think, engage and argue—if this is not what you want to do, you don’t want to be in this course.

Prerequisites:
Introductory studies (Einführungsstudium) completed.

Assessment:
This course crucially depends on your active and informed participation in class. All your requirements are geared towards this:
1. Attend and participate in class. This will count towards your final grade.
2. Complete a “memo” (graded writing exercise) each week. This is meant to get you thinking about the material in an active way. For each memo, I will give you a few guiding questions/tasks. The memo should be around 700 words.
3. Each week, one group will be in charge of the main texts, i.e. they will provide a brief ~10 min summary/overview of the main text(s) and prepare questions to kick-start and lead the discussion. There is no need for a formal presentation.
