Title Sociological Theories II: Modern Theories
Description This course provides an introduction to the development of sociological theories after World War II. This juncture is important because the center of sociological innovation shifts at this point from Europe to America. The central work for this shift is that of Talcott Parsons, which both builds and tears apart the bridge of modern theory to the sociological classics. Parsons` program of a highly abstract synthesis of action and structure theory, and of a theory that explains both order and change, was influential more negatively than positively. Accordingly, one can interpret post-Parsonian approaches like conflict theory, symbolic interactionism, phenomenology or exchange (and rational choice) theory as one-sided criticisms of Parsons` “grand theory”. This debate has in the meantime exhausted itself, and is covered in this course only selectively. In the past 3 decades the center of theoretical innovation has moved back from America to Europe. Examples for the return of European social theory are Luhmann`s “autopoietic” systems theory, Habermas` critical theory of communicative action, Bourdieu`s practice theory, and Foucault`s theory of power—which are all covered more or less extensively in this class.
