Title Clarification-oriented psychotherapy of personality disorders
Description Patients suffering from personality disorders are often the more challenging clients in the everyday life of a psychotherapist: they often lack willingness to cooperate, provoke difficulties in the client-therapist interaction, and have difficulties formulating therapeutic assignments. Moreover, the diagnosis of a personality disorder is often perceived as a stigmatization: the personality as a whole counts as “disordered”, which is disturbing for many patients concerned. The seminar contains a theoretical introduction into the diagnoses of personality disorders, psychopathology, epidemiology, aetiology, and a clarification-oriented approach (according to Sachse) to psychotherapy for the following personality disorders: paranoid, schizoid, schizotypal, narcissistic, histrionic, antisocial, passive-aggressive, obsessive-compulsive, dependent, and avoidant. Controversial aspects of the diagnosis “personality disorder” will be discussed, with a focus on the adoption of a differentiated and appreciative attitude towards the patients concerned.
Students are expected to take part regularly and to actively participate in the discussions. In addition, they will take a deeper look into two books by Rainer Sachse: „Klärungsorientierte Psychotherapie von Persönlichkeitsstörungen“ (2011) and „Persönlichkeitsstörungen, Leitfaden für die Psychologische Psychotherapie“ (2013) and read additional recent articles.
Psychopathology: The seminar counts as a seminar with psychopathological content.
Course assessment: The seminar will conclude with an exam.
