Title |
BA/MA Seminar: Sensory Ethnography |
Description |
if you sign oin for the course you are also signed in for the exam.
„Sensory ethnography“ has emerged as a trendy catch phrase in visual anthropology in the past decade. But is this term simply yet another short-lived academic fashion, or does its conceptual agenda indeed refer to a vibrant „sense of being there“ that is important to anthropological understanding? This course will explore how the aesthetic-sensual and the multisensory-experiential – i.e. the heat, the smell, the press of people, the subtlety of a gesture, the bleakness of the landscape, the quiet in the garden, or the hallucinatory overload of a festival – is transformed into meaningful ethnographic data and can contribute to ways of knowing and comprehending the world. Primarily focusing on recent ethnographic and experimental film we will ask if and how such media convey (in ways that complement and challenge written anthropological texts) the embodiment of the human subject? What is the role of the senses and emotions in non-word based, non-propositional forms of knowledge more generally? Pursuing these questions the course attempts to outline how anthropologists can study and depict the concealed and the embodied without disregarding underlying socio-political contexts and consequences. |
