Nonverbal behavior in Psychotherapy |
| Description |
Nonverbal behavior is omnipresent in social interaction and it influences both the outcome and the quality of a communicational exchange. Traditionally, therapist's nonverbal behavior has been ascribed a crucial role for the development and maintenance of therapeutic relationships. However, the majority of empirical studies addressing nonverbal behavior's impact on the alliance between patient and therapist date back three decades or more. Current research in this domain is rather scarce and the field appears to have been abandoned years ago.
In this seminar, we will review the historical roots of nonverbal behavior in the context of psychotherapy, and we will consider current research employing modern technological tools (e.g. computer-based assessments).
Practical exercises aided by video-assessments will help us fathom the possibilities and frontiers of this important channel of communication. |
