Title |
Heroin assisted treatment (HAT) and forensic psychotherapy |
Description |
Switzerland is one of the few countries where heroin assisted treatment (HAT) is established as a form of therapy. As compared to other substitution treatments, patients receive pharmaceutical heroin (Diacetylmorphine). In 2016, 1’600 heroin addicts were treated in 21 outpatient centers and 1 correctional facility in Switzerland. Goals of the heroin assisted treatment are among others improvement of physical and mental health, low-risk consumer behavior and less drug-related crime.
At the beginning of the class we will talk about heroin addiction, substitution treatments in general and harm reduction. We will investigate how this program can be integrated in the “Berner Ansatz”. The primary focus will be on different aspects of HAT. We will then discuss the indications and evidence of HAT. Furthermore, we will look at heroin assisted treatment in an international context and set a focus on HAT in the forensic setting. We will also discuss forensic psychotherapy and drug delinquency. We will visit the KODA-Bern, which is the heroin treatment center in Berne. We will be introduced to the facilities by the manager and will talk with the psychotherapist working there.
Regular presence (a maximum of two absences), active participation, a short presentation in class and the presentation of a scientific poster will be expected. There will be no test at the end of the semester. |
