Title |
Biopsychosocial model – the integrated approach to health and disease |
Description |
It can be considered a fact that psychological processes can be strongly and effectively changed with psychotherapy. But, what causes this change? The biopsychosocial model of health attempts to include various factors with the aim of achieving a holistic understanding of human functioning. Mental disorders are thus understood as the dysregulation of the body-soul unity which, in turn, effects different life conditions of a patient. The model not only includes psychological aspects regarding the development and improvement of mental disorders, e.g. the emotional processing, cognitive processes or behavior, but rather underlies them with scientific findings from neurobiology, neuropsychology and brain research. This leads to an evidence-based comprehensive understanding of illness and health which enables the possibility to define corresponding preventive, diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. But often such concrete actions are neglected illustrating a major disadvantage of the biopsychosocial model. The main purpose of this course is to overcome this disadvantage: We will study the various components (bio-psycho-social) of the model based on selected mental disorders, such as PTSD, develop concrete interventions and discuss their clinical relevance. Particular attention will be paid to the biological components of the model, whereby current findings from psychoendocrinology and epigenetics are included. The seminar is divided into different thematic modules: After a repetition of common psychological stress models, the participants learn about the effects stress has on biopsychological processes. In the middle phase of the semester, different psychotherapeutic treatment forms (solution- as well as clarification-oriented) are presented and discussed. Through role-plays, exercises and case studies, students are given the opportunity to get to know selected therapeutic interventions. The experiences are then critically reviewed and evaluated in class. An open discussion and the integration of own experiences from internships are desired, but are not a necessary condition for participation in the seminar. |
