Title |
Medical-psychological principles in clinical psychology of children and youth |
Description |
In Switzerland, about 5-10% of the children suffer from a chronical medical condition such as asthma, epilepsy or diabetes. In adolescents, it’s even one third having to deal with a somatic illness that lasts for at least six months. We already know that physical and psychological factors interact with each other – the central assumption of medical psychology. Consequently, psychologists will surely encounter young patients that also suffer from a chronical medical condition and on the other hand, psychologists are much needed in the comprehensive and long-term treatment of chronically ill children in order to positively influence the patient’s well-being.
Within this course, we will attend to chronic diseases during childhood and youth (such as asthma, type 1 diabetes mellitus, headaches, stomach pain, obesity) according to the biopsychosocial model. Besides, we will deal with the psychological long-term consequences of (extreme) prematurity and organ transplantation. For each medical condition, the pathophysiological mechanisms will be worked out and, in a next step, be looked at from a clinical psychological point of view. Social factors will mainly refer to the core family system and peers.
Students are expected to actively participate in this course (missing lessons will be accepted twice) and to (partly) arrange a lesson by giving presentations. |
