Title |
Field Theories |
Description |
Recent years have seen a growing interest in field theoretical perspectives. These perspectives offer explanatory approaches at the meso-level of social order. They allow theorizing regularities in individual behavior by recourse to positions in variously defined “fields,” their structuration and inherent logics of action. The goal of this seminar is to familiarize ourselves with the perspectives of key proponents of field theories. This includes Bourdieu’s (structuralist) perspective on social fields, the neo-institutionalist perspective from DiMaggio and Powell, and Fligstein’s and McAdam’s theory of strategic action fields. We will review their historical roots, discuss differences and similarities, and assess their value in theorizing the social.
