Title |
Risky and self-damaging behavior in youth |
Description |
Risky and self-injurious behavior, such as repetitive non-suicidal self-injury (e.g. cutting, beating or burning), suicidal behavior (suicidal thoughts, plans or actions), substance abuse, pathological media and Internet use, risky sexual behavior (e.g. unprotected sexual activity) as well as school absence occur frequently in adolescence. While an increased readiness to engage in risky and self-injurious behavior during adolescence is considered as "normal", in a subgroup of adolescents this behavior is associated with increasing psychopathology and psychosocial distress (e.g. family conflicts; educational difficulties). In the seminar, current scientific findings on phenomenology, epidemiology and etiology of risky and self-injurious behavior will be discussed. In addition, diagnostic procedures and psychotherapeutic interventions, in particular from dialectical behavioral therapy for adolescents (DBT-A), will be introduced.
The seminar will be held as a block seminar. Requirements for the seminar include active participation in group discussions, reading and presenting selected papers, and passing a final exam. |
