Title Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology and Psychotherapy
Description Mental disorders in adulthood often begin in childhood and adolescence, have a high likelihood of persistence and are associated with substantial psychosocial impairments. Furthermore, they are risk factors for the development of comorbid or other mental disorders in adulthood. Therefore, childhood and adolescence is regarded as an important stage of life for psychological interventions with the aim to have a beneficial effect on the course and development as early as possible.

Based on the first part of this lecture (“Clinical Psychology in Children and Adolescents: Basics”), the second part will further elaborate this basic knowledge about diagnostic procedures and evidence-based interventions and broaden it to mental disorders that typically begin in adolescence (e.g. psychosis, depression, self-injurious behavior, media addiction). Additionally, transdiagnostic approaches (e.g. family diagnostics) and evidence-based interventions for several mental disorders (e.g. systemic therapy, family therapy) as well as important legal requirements (e.g. confidentiality) when conducting psychotherapy in children and adolescents will be addressed.
This part of the lecture will be completed with a written exam (MC-questions). A podcast will be available.
Participation in the first part of the lecture is not mandatory but recommended as basic theories, concepts and classification systems are introduced in this part and extended in the second part.
