Title |
BA/MA Sachbereichs-/Regionalübung: Nollywood – An Anthropological View on a Transnational Film Phenomenon |
Description |

In just over two decades, Nollywood—the Nigerian video film industry—has emerged from a local venture to a global phenomenon. Even though its films are hardly known in the West, Nollywood forms today one of the largest film industries in the world. It shows its spectators new postcolonial forms of performative self-expression and excites a large number of viewers inside and outside Nigeria. This way, Nollywood has become popular in African communities all around the world and serves people of African descent as a cultural reference point. Yet, Nigerian home videos not only entertain migrant viewers, they also inspire some of them to become active themselves and produce their own films.
In this course, students will look at the transnational phenomenon of Nollywood through the lens of social anthropology. They will read texts, present and discuss different aspects of the phenomenon, and watch Nollywood and Nollywood-inspired films, exploring the social and cultural complexity behind Nollywood's emergence, its structure, its global expansion as well as its appeal to migrant viewers and filmmakers. Taking Nollywood as a point of departure, the course so aims at an understanding of the way cultural phenomena are shaped under the conditions of globalisation.
