Title |
Practical training in research: Auditing the algorithmic turn |
Description |
Lectured by Mykola Makhortykh
During the course, the students will learn how to prepare and implement a research project. The special emphasis is to be made on research methods dealing with auditing the political, cultural, and societal effects of algorithmic systems (e.g., web search engines or personalized news recommendations). Algorithmic auditing is a set of research techniques used to investigate the functionality and impact of decision-making mechanisms powering algorithmic systems. Such systems are increasingly deployed in different communication fields (e.g., news media, heritage industry, and politics), but their obscurity raises multiple concerns about their potential impacts on individuals and societies, thus raising the need for auditing their performance. The course will combine the conceptual overview of the algorithmic turn in different societal spheres and its normative effects with the introduction of methodological toolbox used to collect and analyze digital data on algorithmic systems and their effects. The toolbox will include both qualitative (e.g., manual content analysis) and quantiative (e.g., statistical analysis) approaches that students can use to prepare their final projects. Experience of programming in Python/R is not required, but students are encouraged to use these programming languages to facilitate data collection and analyses.
