Alcohol addiction: From neuroscientific research, to therapeutic concepts and interventions. A course with an theatre event. |
| Description |
Substance use disorders are among the most common mental disorders. Their impact on the quality of life of patients and their families is immense. The seminar will target clinical psychological/psychotherapeutical questions as well as neurophysiological characteristics of addicition; a strong focus will be on alcohol use disorders.
The first part of the seminar addresses diagnosis, epidemiology, and etiology of substance use disorders, and then concentrates on therapeutic interventions in individual and group setting. Exercises and role playing will be employed here. A special focus is on motivational interviewing. After learning relevant concepts of motivational interviewing, we will deepen the knowledge during a interactive theater session performed by the theater company Konfliktüre. In this session, students will view a motivational discourse on stage and will be able to interrupt whenever they feel that the therapist could have responded in a way which is closer following the concepts of motivational interviewing. Thus, students can train to translate theoretical concepts into practical advise.
The second part of the seminar deals with neurophysiological peculiarities in addiction: Here selected findings from neurobiological research in the field of addiction are considered. In particular, a neurobiological model of addiction will be presented and we will also discuss questions like: What inferences regarding a successful therapy can be drawn from neurophysiological research? |
