Title Trauma and the development of the borderline personality disorder
Description Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a common and pervasive mental disorder that usually first appears in adolescence and is associated with high levels of distress for the affected individuals and their families, persistent psychosocial dysfunction and high suicide rates. The vast majority of people with BPD report traumatic life experiences in the past and up to 60% of BPD patients meet the criteria for comorbid post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The seminar provides an introduction to BPD in adolescence, highlights PTSD as a common comorbidity and discusses empirical findings on the links between traumatic life experiences (e.g. emotional neglect, physical or sexual abuse, bullying) and the development of emotional dysregulation and risky and self-harming behaviors (e.g. self-harm, alcohol/drug use). Students will learn diagnostic procedures and evidence-based psychotherapeutic interventions for the treatment of BPD and comorbid PTSD in adolescence. A special focus will be placed on trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy (TF-CBT) according to Cohen as well as trauma exposure within Dialectical Behavioral Therapy for Adolescents (DBT-A). The practical implementation of the seminar contents is practiced in the context of case studies and role plays.
