Title |
Stamp Seals from the Southern Levant (virtual seminar together with the universities of Zurich and Tel Aviv) |
Description |
The course starts on Monday, 28.2.2022; the zoom link is found on Ilias
***
The course addresses stamp seals, a relatively common but highly valued and multi-functional artefact class, as a privileged media to study various aspects of ancient Levantine social, economic, cultural, and religious history, especially in pre-Hellenistic times. It aims to expose students in the three collaborating universities to the potential of studying stamp seals for a better understanding of past societies and foster the exchange of knowledge, methods, and perspectives among students of different disciplines: archaeology, ancient history, ancient Near Eastern cultures, theology/biblical studies, and the study of religions.
This multidisciplinary seminar – which takes place under the umbrella of an ongoing SNSF Sinergia Project – will introduce students from all three participating universities to this type of miniature art, their (diachronic) archaeological contexts and the symbol systems as reflected by their iconography. |
