Title |
Programming Experiments with Open Source Software |
Description |
Most researchers in psychology and neuroscience will encounter the necessity to program an experiment in a computer environment during their studies and later in their career.
Many have already learned about Presentation® and E-Prime® which are well-established but costly experimental environments. More and more, researchers and even the industry rely on open source solutions such as PsychoPy or OpenSesame for designing and programming simple but also complex experiments.
In this seminar, students will be introduced to the functionalities of PsychoPy.
PsychoPy offers an intuitive graphical interface (the "Builder") as well as the possibility to insert Python code directly (the "Coder"). This combination allows beginners to efficiently create a simple experiment and more advanced, already experienced programmers to program more complex and dynamic experiments using Python code. PsychoPsy is free and open-source, cross-platform, and offers almost limitless functionality. PsychoPy is a Python module, which means that it can be nicely combined with other Python modules e.g. Matlab level matrix operations (numpy), image and audio manipulations, advanced statistics, etc.
The seminar is a hands-on introduction to PsychoPy and is intended for master's students in psychology who are interested in learning to design and program an experiment. It will teach how to "program" a computer so that it can be used as an "interaction partner" in psychological research.
The knowledge acquired is not only essential for research in universities, but also a highly desirable skill in many areas of professional psychological practice and as important as mastering computer program packages for statistical data analysis. |
