Title Evolution and human behaviour
Description The human brain is only about 1350 cubic centimetres in size, but it is the most complex organic structure known to science. Understanding the human mind and brain mechanisms in evolutionary perspective is the goal of the scientific discipline called evolutionary psychology.
Evolutionary psychology sees human nature as a finely tuned system of specific innate readiness to perceive the environment, to assess situations, to learn certain things with particular ease, and to develop certain emotional reactions and motives more easily than others.
In this seminar we will read and discuss classic and current evolutionary psychological research. We will deal with problems of survival, coexistence and aggression, as well as the challenges of partner choice and reproduction. We will consider and try to explain these important components and aspects of human behaviour from an evolutionary psychological point of view. We will include findings from various disciplines. For example, we will use studies from neuroscience, social and affective sciences and personality psychology to draw the most holistic picture possible of human phylogenesis.
