Title Disruptions in Parent-Child Interactions
Description A reliable parent-child relationship is an important protective factor for psychological development in childhood. Various family risk factors (e.g., parenting difficulties, mental illness of a parent, or emotional abuse) may result in disruptions of parent-child interactions and thereby contribute to an increased risk for the development of mental illness in the child.
In this seminar, we will discuss current research findings on disruptions of parent-child interactions. First, we will approach the topic using theoretical explanations of why the parent-child relationship is fundamental to psychological development. On the basis of empirical findings, we will then work out different scenarios of a disrupted parent-child interaction and its implications for the child's well-being. We will further address how parent-child interactions and their disruptions can be measured. As such, special research methods enable the investigation of real-time brain processes in dyadic interactions. We will finally get to know therapeutic interventions for disturbed parent-child interactions.
Requirements for this seminar include a regular and active participation, leading a seminar unit, and passing a final written exam.
