Type of exam Oral exam
Title Advanced Course I Optical Engineering
Description The course deals with the four main topics "beam manipulation", “image formation”, "optical metrology and distance measurement" as well as " image processing and analysis".

Beam manipulation:
- Methods for beam delivery (free space, waveguides, fiber bundles, highly multimode fibers)
- beam steering with flying optics, scanners, MOEMS, special optics etc.
- beam shaping with standard optics, diffractive optical elements, spatial light modulators, accusto- and electrooptical modulators

Image formation:
- 2D image formation: Point spread function, resolution, depth of focus, bit depth, gamma factor, noise
- 3D image formation: holography, tomography, pleoptic methods, ptychography

Optical metrology:
- International System of Units, base and derived units, realization of units, tracability
- Radiometric and photometric units: flux, intensity, radiance, luminosity function
- Uncertainties: statistical and systematic, propagation, uncertainty budget.
- Distance measurements, time of flight, optical coherence tomography, interferometer

Image processing and analysis:
- Overview & Image Processing Summary, Segmentation & Representation
- Feature Extraction and Point Features (Harris, SIFT): Classification
- Shallow Neural Networks and Convolutional Neural Networks

Preqrequisites

- A successful passing of the courses " Introduction to Precision Optics" and "Introduction to Ultraprecision Engineering" is strongly recommended
- Matlab installed on the computer/laptop
