Title |
Language, Gender and Sexuality (w/ seminar paper) |
Description |
This course offers an exploration of language and language use as it relates to gender and sexuality. Considering evidence from a variety of cultural and linguistic contexts, we discuss the ways that language comes to be associated with gendered and sexual meanings, how individuals can use language to enact gendered and sexual identities, and the way that language works to perpetuate gendered and sexual inequalities. Topics to be covered include language and gendered/sexual ideologies, language and desire, language and gendered/sexual activism, the commodification of gendered and sexualized language, and the relationship between language and sexual violence. Throughout, we draw on elements of feminist and queer political theories to inform our discussion and to help develop a working model of the relationship between language and social identity. |
