Title |
Stereotypes and Prejudice |
Description |
Women are sensitive, librarians are introverted, skinheads are aggressive, and black people are athletic. In social psychology, these beliefs about social groups reflect cognitive schemas, known as stereotypes. Why do we often judge individuals based on general stereotypes about the social category to which these individuals belong? How are stereotypes formed in the first place? What are the consequences of stereotyping? How can prejudices based on such stereotypes be reduced?
The aim of this course will be to present main research and models on stereotypes and prejudices. In addition to reviewing the theoretical foundations, practical implications of the individual models will be pointed out.
Prerequisites for the acquisition of 4 ECTS credits:
(1) Preparation of basic literature so that questions and problems can be discussed in the course.
(2) Each student has to work in a small group on one topic in depth and contribute to one proseminar session (graded)
(3) Preparation of an individual learning diary for the entire proseminar (graded)
(4) Regular and active participation (max. 2 missed dates).
The grade for the proseminar is based on the group work (1/3) and the individual learning diary (2/3). The learning diary must be handed in by the end of the semester. |
