Course Goals
The goal of the course is to gain a basic understanding of both the traditional and new trade theory. After the course students should be able to explain the main theories and empirical findings from the international trade literature. Also, students should be able to work at a basic level with the (formal) models used in international trade theory.
Course Content
We cover the following themes:
1. Comparative advantage and the Ricardian model
2. Factor abundance
3. Intraindustry trade and monopolistic competition
4. Economic integration and geography
5. Multinational Firms
6. Firm heterogeneity
7. Estimating gravity models
8. Global Value Chains
9. International trade and Climate Change
Grading
Grading: final exam (80%); class participation (20%).
Course Organization
Each week there will be a lecture and 3 classes half of the lecture will be used to discuss homework sets.
Homework Sets
There are two homework sets, which have to be submitted in written form. The homework sets will also be discussed in class on the day they are submitted.
Assignment
There is one assignment about the applied topic (trade and climate change).
