Title European Politics
Description The lecture «The European Union» introduced the history and theories of European Integration as well as the political system and institutions of the European Union (EU). Building on this foundational introduction of the EU, we will examine in this lecture the politics of European integration (as well as disintegration dynamics with the discussion of Brexit and the democratic backsliding in member states like Hungary). To this end, we will focus on the study of differentiated integration, political conflicts in the EU, and public opinion on various aspects related to the EU. Moreover, we will analyze how European affairs are politicized in the domestic arenas of EU member states and further investigate the politics of specific contested areas, such as immigration, enlargement, and distributional politics. Finally, we will also examine how Switzerland is embedded within the EU by analyzing the history and current challenges of Swiss-EU relations.
