Title |
Methods Course Neuroscience in the Computer Lab |
Description |
In this application-oriented course, students will learn and independently apply methods of data collection, processing and analysis in the field of neuroscience. We will focus on the following topics in particular:
- Programming experiments
- Programming data processing pipelines: data preprocessing and visualisation ("good practices", data cleaning, reproducibility)
- Analysis of different neuroscientific data sets with frequentist as well as Bayesian methods (reaction times, time series, signal detection theory)
- Interpretation and critical classification of analysis results
Students will work with the programming language R (and to a small extent with Python).
The focus of this course is on hands-on sessions in which students directly apply the acquired knowledge. Students will need their own laptop (tablets are not suitable) with approx. 20 GB of free storage space.
Credits will be awarded in the form of exercises.
R knowledge (according to Statistics I-IV in Psychology) is assumed. All students will receive a link for a self-assessment and the corresponding resources approximately 1 month before the start of the course in order to fill any gaps in their self-study before the start of the course.
Students who are not majoring in psychology and need to acquire R knowledge can use the resources below beforehand:
- Visit "Introduction to R: Statistics II Course" - Bachelor Psychology and exercises.
- Resources on programming with R can be found, for example, at https://methodenlehre.github.io/einfuehrung-in-R/, or for advanced students the books "Advanced R" and "R for Data Scientists" by Hadley Wickham: http://adv-r.had.co.nz/ and https://r4ds.had.co.nz/.
Advanced R knowledge will be taught during the course. |
