Introduction to Data Science |
Description |
Data is the new oil! Or so goes the popular adage. Indeed, data today forms the backbone of decision-making in sectors ranging from healthcare, hospitality, defense, government, education etc. In this course students will be introduced to the basics of data science and what a career in data science entails. Students will understand how the work of a data scientist helps organizations in making more effective decisions. The course will be taught in person and includes two types of sessions:
A) Lectures: Students will be introduced to different concepts, methods, and applications. They will gain useful insights required for hands-on experiences in the workshop sessions.
B) Workshops: There will be sessions in which students will be introduced to the basics of python programming. Python is the most popular programming language in the data science profession and a preliminary knowledge of Python fundamentals will go a long way in students being able to explore various facets of the data science practice.
No preliminary programming knowledge is required. Students will gain the necessary skills in the workshops. It is necessary that students use their personal notebooks for the workshop sessions. Attendance and active participation of students in both lectures and workshops are highly recommended. Students also need to be willing to dedicate some time of their own to successfully accomplish the required tasks of this course. |
