Title |
Specialist Course - Particle Physics I |
Description |
This lecture deals with a selection of special topics in particle physics. Starting from experimental methods in proton scattering experiments the structure of the proton is revealed and basic principles of quantum chromo-dynamics are discussed (Bjorken scaling, running of the strong coupling constant, renormalization and factorization scales). With this knowledge, the proton collisions at the LHC are discussed. In the second part of this course, the electroweak interaction is discussed in detail. Starting from basic principles from quantum field theory and asking for gauge invariance, the SU(2)xU(1) Yang-Mills structure of the electro-weak sector of the Standard Model is considered. This leads to (massless) fermions and gauge-bosons that, after appropriate mixing and fixing of the U(1) hyper-charges. Special emphasis is given to the understanding of the electro-weak couplings of Z bosons to left- and right-handed fermions, from which the the branching ratios of Z bosons decaying to fermions can be estimated at tree-level. In the third part of this lecture the Higgs mechanism and spontaneous symmetry breaking leading is treated. The Lagrangian of the Standard Model including all the Higgs terms is systematically constructed. As a result the generation of the vector bosons is shown as well as the mass of fermions through coupling with the Higgs field. Finally the discovery of the Higgs boson at the LHC (and specifically with ATLAS) will be presented.
In a second part, interaction of radiation with matter will be discussed, allowing to delve into the principles of operation of particle detectors. |
