Allocation to subject Psychology
Type of exam not defined
Title Understanding Personality
Description Starts in the 2nd week of the semester!

Content:
How can we better understand ourselves and other people and predict behavior? The goal of this proseminar is to learn more about the mechanisms, which form, influence, and change personality. We begin with the biological and neurological foundations of personality and the resultant trait approaches. Beyond that, we will have a look at the cognitive, emotional, and motivational processes that interact with social factors (goals, expectations, motives, social intelligence) to influence our personality characteristics. Additionally, the broader cultural environment, which defines certain frame conditions, will be discussed. After considering these particular mechanisms, we will address the question of which processes contribute to the coherent picture of personality that we are able to discren despite these various influencing factors. Finally, we cover how stable or variable personality is, respectively what contributes to stability and change in personality throughout the life span.

Requirements:
The format of the proseminar is based on discussions, which are mainly led by the students. Thereby students learn to engage critically with scientific literature. Requirements are frequent and active participation, including the answering of questions as a preparation for the discussions. The creation and moderation of one discussion-session based on self-developed leading questions, as well as a reflective journal about the course content form the final grade.

Literature: Will be announced at the start of the semester.
