Title |
Need to belong: Reactions to social exlusion. |
Description |
During the course of evolution hominids evolved a strong tendency toward sociality and group-living because solitary individuals were unlikely to survive, reproduce, and have offspring. Therefore human beings are very responsive to how other people perceive, evaluate, and feel about them. Within this course we will discuss the causes of social exclusion and rejection as well as the effects on emotions, self-esteem, cognitive abilities, and behavior. Why and when, for example, do rejected persons sometimes even show aggressive behavior, which further increases the aversion of others? On the other hand, when does rejection increase the motivation to re-establish social connections and when do people prefer social withdrawal? And how can possible negative consequences of social rejection and exclusion be reduced?
Course structure: The sessions in the first part of the course deal with different theoretical and empirical approaches to the causes and effects of social exclusion. In the second part , the different topics will be integrated (group work). |
