Title Basics 2: Introduction to the New Testament - Paul and Pauline literature
Description This is part 2 of an introductory course on the New Testament. The aim is to acquire a profound knowledge of the content and formation (who wrote to whom and where, when, and why?) of the various corpora within the New Testament as well as their respective theological profiles. Such an undertaking is critically important for any study program in Christian theology (and for every form of ecclesial work as well!).
Part 2 of this introduction to the New Testament concerns an overview of Paul and Pauline Literature. The preliminary matters necessary for such study cannot be presented in whole in a lecture format, therefore students must reckon with completing some work outside of the classroom if they want to gain a solid understanding of the various writings of the Corpus Paulinum. The first such component is a close reading of the New Testament itself. All the relevant NT writings should be read at least once before the first day of class. Learning the basic information concerning each writing should be conducted via private study so that class sessions may provide the opportunity to dive deeper into the material (handouts to this end will be provided via ILIAS). In addition, an introductory textbook should be read during the course of the semester.
The recommended textbooks are:
- Karl-Wilhelm Niebuhr (Hg.), Grundinformation Neues Testament. Eine bibelkundlich-theologische Einführung, UTB 2108, Göttingen 2020 (5. Aufl.).
Or:
- Udo Schnelle, Einleitung in das Neue Testament, UTB 1830, Göttingen 2017 (9. Aufl.).
Or:
- Friedrich Wilhelm Horn (Hg.), Paulus Handbuch, Tübingen 2013

Course prerequisite: Graecum
