Title |
Introduction to Sustainable Economy |
Description |
In the past almost 250 years the focus of economics was the maximization of profits and production of goods, both within the economy as well as according to the prevailing doctrine and school of thought. Market failure was often neglected or underestimated throughout the three dimensions of sustainability (ecology, economics and sociocultural sphere). In light of current problems such as climate change, the overexploitation of natural resources as well as poverty and issues of distributive justice, it is necessary to question at least certain aspects of the growth-orientated economy. Due to their paradigms and dogmas, traditional economic approaches fail to make a sufficient contribution to the urgently needed development towards a sustainable economy and society.
The course deals with the central economic mechanisms, the systemic interconnections and the driving forces behind the current unsustainable development. It intends to show how sustainable economics has evolved from classical economics (neoclassic theory) and from sustainable science (ecological economics). The course explores (1) how to achieve sufficiently high economic, ecological and sociocultural standards within the limits of the ecological/environmental viability (of our planet) and (2) how to implement the principle of intra- and intergenerational justice. Starting with these theoretical basics, the students are supposed to deal with the interdisciplinary aspects of sustainable development in chosen areas of activities or problem fields. |
