Title |
Development of aggressive behavior: Developmental trajectories and intervention |
Description |
Content: In this proseminar, we will discuss theories and empirical findings on aggression from a developmental psychology perspective. First, we will look at the stability as well as typical developmental trajectories of different forms of aggression from early childhood to early adulthood. We will pay special attention to risk factors for later externalizing disorders (e.g., conduct disorder or antisocial personality disorder) by looking at individual level factors as well as key environmental factors and their interactions. Theoretical accounts of whether aggressive behavior is innate, learned/ maintained, on how gender differences arise, and how bullying emerges as an aggressive group phenomenon will be addressed. Additionally, relevant empirical studies will be discussed. Finally, we will look at different prevention and intervention approaches and critically discuss the program contents as well as the effectiveness of selected programs.
Requirements: Attendance of the proseminar is associated with high requirements: First, independent reading of English articles, an interactive exchange about the literature on the basis of guiding questions as well as a regular attendance of the proseminar (max. 2 missed appointments) is expected. Second, students will work on the basics of academic writing in a self-learning course. Upon completion of the e-learning course modules, students will create a written transfer task to apply the theoretical knowledge into practice. This transfer task will be presented in the classroom seeting. The final grade will incorporate both responses to the guiding questions and the assessment of the written assignment.
