Title Evolutionary biology and population genetics
Description Evolutionary Biology (Peichel, SW 1-7 / first half of semester):

Natural selection and adaptation
Genetic basis of phenotypic variation
Sexual selection
Maintenance of variation in populations
Genome evolution
Evolution of sex
Evolution of sex-determination mechanisms

Part 2 Population Genetics (Bank), SW 8-14 (second half of semester):

This course will use a combination of lectures and discussion of research papers and simulations to teach the following topics in population genetics:

Wright-Fisher model
Genetic drift and its consequences within and between populations
Population subdivision, genetic structure of populations, migration models
Fitness, deterministic models of selection (directional, balancing and disruptive selection)
Interaction between selection and genetic drift
Selection at the molecular level; effect of selective sweeps on molecular diversity
Neutral theory of evolution; concept of the molecular clock
Effect of recombination on genetic diversity; linkage disequilibrium
Simulating population genetics
