Title BA-Vorlesung SP2: Introduction to the History of the Middle East from Late Antiquity to Postmodern Times
Description This lecture explores the history of Islamic communities from Late Antiquity to the present day. Rather than striving for exhaustive coverage, it aims to provide students with a foundational overview and orientation based on the latest scholarly research. Students will engage with key historical events, ranging from the pre-Islamic period and the emergence of Islam to the Islamic empires of the classical and post-classical periods and the nation-states of the modern era. Particular emphasis is placed on understanding these events in their historical contexts, fostering the ability to identify historical processes and trajectories of social (trans)formation.
The lecture equips students with solid foundation of knowledge and essential understanding of Islamicate history, enabling them to accommodate, contextualize and critically assess new details and information.
The lecture is accompanied by a supplementary course, the BA-Grundlagenseminar SP2, and attending both is generally recommended—especially for students pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies. While the lecture provides a broad overview, the seminar offers opportunities for reflection and more focused exploration of the lecture's themes.
To achieve the learning objectives of this lecture, students are expected to engage in regular attendance as well as independent preparation and review. Beginning in the second week, each session will be accompanied by a required reading from an introductory textbook, along with optional supplementary materials (e.g., podcasts).
Students will self-assess their learning progress throughout the semester via mandatory exercises on the ILIAS platform. The course will conclude with a final exam during the last week of classes.
