Title Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs): Childhood trauma and resilience
Description Content:
A better understanding of the complexities of childhood adversities, including trauma and resilience, may help us to derive policy and practice applications that can substantially benefit the (mental) health and wellbeing of children, adolescents, and adults. ACEs science (ACEs = Adverse Childhood Experiences) is primarily a public health construct, that evolved from Felliti et al.’s (1998) landmark study on the long-term impact of adversities in childhood on health and health risk behaviors in adulthood. ACEs science offers rich and promising trauma-informed perspectives on human development. In this seminar, we will explore and discuss ways in which ACEs can affect a child’s development and ways to help a child recover from ACEs.
This course provides an excellent opportunity to learn about pressing research questions, research methods, and potential applications of this very promising and rapidly growing field of research. First, we will address the definition and assessment of ACEs. Second, we will discuss mechanisms through which ACEs affect human development as well as factors of resilience. Finally, we will explore how ACEs science can translate into high quality services. Selected theoretical and empirical contributions will be discussed to highlight the interdisciplinary nature of this modern field of research.
Requirements: This seminar requires a high level of continuous and active participation. For all sessions, basic literature has to be elaborated on the basis of guiding questions; these are discussed in the seminar. Each topic will be covered by a student input based on an empirical study. In addition, students will work on a writing assignment: they will either work on a concept outlining a possible application of this research (translation and dissemination of research findings) or on a research proposal for an intervention study. For the grading of the 5 ECTS, the input based on the empirical study as well as the written assignment will be considered. No more than 1 missed appointment.
Literature: Selected articles (on Ilias).
Registration: Registration must be made through KSL. The registration is compulsory and cannot be cancelled or changed.
ILIAS-Link (Learning resource for course) Registrations are transmitted from CTS to ILIAS (no admission in ILIAS possible). ILIAS
