Title |
Climate and Society in History |
Description |
This course familiarizes students with different approaches to investigate climatic influences on past societies. The main theme of the course changes annually. In autumn semester 2022, the theme is volcanic impacts. To what degree we can link, for example, the occurrence of famines, outbreak of violent conflicts and cultural responses to volcanic-induced climatic disturbances? The case studies discussed in the class span from antiquity to the contemporary era, although the emphasis is on 15th to 19th centuries CE. The course consists of lectures, discussions and exercises. In addition, the students will work on a theme related historical case study and prepare an oral presentation and a written report on it. In this course, the students will learn practical skills 1) how to critically assess the role of climate in historical research and 2) how historical aspects can be addressed adequately in climatological research. The aim of the course is to provide hands-on view on how to explore past climate-society interactions in academic study. |
