Title |
Prevention of mental disorders and mental health promotion |
Description |
Mental disorders often begin in childhood, adolescence, or emerging adulthood. They tend to persist, increase the risk for comorbid disorders, and are associated with psychosocial impairments for the individual as well as the social environment (e.g., lose social networks, difficulties in school or job). Nevertheless, individuals with mental problems often seek no or only delayed support in the form of prevention. Most prevention programs so far have been developed for specific mental problems or disorders. However, this contradicts current evidence that early signs of a mental disorder are mainly transdiagnostic in nature. In this lecture, students will 1) get an introduction and conceptual overview of approaches of prevention and promotion of mental health across the life-span; 2) get to know evidence-based disorder- or problem-oriented prevention approaches (e.g., bullying/cyber-bullying, gender identity, depression and suicidality, internet addiction, children of mentally ill parents, self-injurious behaviors); and learn about current transdiagnostic approaches (e.g., rumination, intolerance of uncertainty, self-esteem/self-perfectionism, emotion regulation).
A podcast and live-stream via Zoom will be available.
This is conceptualized as the second part of the lecture "Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology and Psychotherapy". |
