Activity: Participation in a current research project of the research group or, by arrangement, work on your own topic. Answering your own research question through scientific work. The modalities (including timetable and details regarding grading) of the Bachelor's thesis are determined in personal consultation with the lecturers before it begins.
Date: by personal arrangement, preferably during the semester break.
Duration: Practical (preparatory) work: approx. 5 weeks full-time or equivalent in the research group. The Bachelor's thesis is written independently after the practical work or directly after the practical work in the group.
Scope of the Bachelor's thesis: main part approx. 15 pages (excl. cover sheet, appendices, etc.). Introduction, material & methods, results, discussion, bibliography (approx. 20 scientific references).
“We are what we eat”. Yet, while the human diet is turning more and more towards veganism, little is known about the bioactive, plant-derived, compounds that we ingest daily and how our diet affects our health. In this practical, we (i) characterize the diversity of chemicals that we ingest from our diet and (ii) evaluate how it affects our health, either through surveys (e.g. effects on well being, depressive symptoms, sleep, anxiety) or through experimental assays (e.g. on the gut microbiome, resistance to diseases,…). This work is highly pluridisciplinary and involves collaborations with the Infectious Diseases Institute (IFIK) and the Biomedical Research Center (DBMR) and the Insel Spital. The specific focus of the practical is discussed with their supervisor according to the project status and student interests. Of note: this work is confidential and requires the student to sign a confidentiality/IP agreement upon start. |
