Title Effects of brain damage on social cognition and interaction
Description "Social cognition" encompasses a wide range of abilities to mentally represent ourselves, our environment, our relationships and interactions and to behave accordingly. This requires many different and interconnected regulatory processes, which are described using constructs such as "empathy" and "theory of mind".
Our social interactions are of the utmost importance for our quality and organisation of life, so that deficits in social cognition have a dramatic impact on the way we lead our lives.
Impairments in social cognition can occur after numerous neurological diseases (and also in psychiatric disorders) and are - among other things - a fixed component (one of the six core functions in the diagnosis of neurocognitive disorders) in the DSM-5 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th edition).
Accordingly, neuropsychology has a duty to develop standardised, easy-to-use, easily accessible, economical and valid tests for the assessment of social cognition and to make them available for clinical use.
In this seminar, the various aspects of social cognition will be examined, aetiological and anatomical classifications of impairments following acquired brain damage will be attempted and current operationalisations and (pre-)test procedures will be tested, taking into account basic literature, current studies, presentations of current research work and patient examples.
