Title |
Social Psychology of Tolerance |
Description |
When people are aware of salient differences and disagree about the value of various viewpoints and ways of life, the question of tolerance arises. Not only in relation to religious, cultural, ideological, and viewpoint differences but also concerning everyday things such as annoying habits of one’s partner, the views and behaviour of one’s children, disagreements at work, and neighbourhood hassles.
In this seminar, we want to find answers to the following questions (among others):
How can tolerance be conceptualised, and what advantages and disadvantages are associated with different approaches to tolerance?
What psychological processes are involved in practising tolerance, and what are the boundaries of tolerance?
What are the social psychological implications of being the target of toleration, i.e. (only) being tolerated?
And what practical implications and suggestions for politics and education can be derived from the findings so far? |
