Title From Physiology to Personality: Differential Approaches to Psychophysiological Measurements
Description Content:
Psychological research can benefit from psychophysiological findings. This also applies to differential psychology. In the seminar, students will work out how psychophysiological measurements can benefit them and become familiar with the following psychophysiological measurement methods: electroencephalography (EEG), eye tracking, electrodermal activity (EDA) and the electrocardiogram (ECG).
In the first part of the seminar, the psychophysiological measurement methods will be demonstrated, and the biological principles discussed. Students are given the opportunity to test a selection of the devices themselves. At the end of the first part of the seminar, students receive information on formulating questions and creating study-designs.
In the second part of the seminar, students will use this knowledge to develop a differential psychological research question based on a specific personality-psychological construct, which can be investigated using psychophysiological measurements. Students are free to choose the specific construct. Examples could be:
- Sensation Seeking
- Anxiety (or specifically test anxiety)
- Impulsiveness
- Perfectionism
- Self-efficacy or locus of control
- Needs and motives e.g., affiliation or achievement motive
- States such as boredom or anger
The research question and the design are refined, presented by the students and discussed with each other. Using the findings from the discussions with the seminar group, the students finalise their study concept.

Requirements:
Regular and active participation in the seminar; development of a differential psychological research question; short presentation of the question; creation of a concept for the realisation of the research question.
