Title Language and Violence
Description How is language implicated in supporting and propagating violence? Is language itself violent? Where can we draw the line between a right to free expression and a need to protect people from harm? These are questions that have been examined extensively in philosophy and, to a lesser extent, sociolinguistics. This course provides an overview of the major theoretical frameworks that have been proposed to think about the relationship between language and violence and of the research that has been conducted to document language’s violent effects. Topics to be covered include hate speech, derogatory language, linguistic microaggressions, and harassment and mobbing, among others. The course meets 6 times throughout the semester. Between class meetings, students will read primary literature from linguistics, philosophy, anthropology and other disciplines and compose brief summaries of the research. For students taking the course for 7 ECTS, a seminar paper analysing an empirical example of violent language is also required. This course is capped at 20 students.
