Title |
Science and Politics of the Anthropocene: Epistemological and Critical Perspectives |
Description |
The Anthropocene denotes the current regime of disruptive human interferences in fundamental, life-support planetary processes – climate change and biodiversity loss being two important aspects among several others. This lecture examines the entangled epistemic (i.e. related to knowledge and its limitations) and non-epistemic (i.e. ethical, political,…) challenges that the multi-dimensional nature of the Anthropocene raises for the natural science characterization of this new regime (e.g. in view of policy-making). Building on the scholarship about values in science, the lecture will discuss these challenges from an interdisciplinary and critical perspective: particular attention will thus be devoted to the value-laden and normative aspects of ‘Anthropocene science’ (e.g. climate science, Earth system science) – as within the influential planetary boundary framework – and their linkage with political and critical social science issues.
