Title |
Societal Transformations and Sustainable Development |
Description |
This seminar examines key processes of societal transformation and their implications for sustainable development. We will use a variety of analytical approaches, including theoretical models, case studies, and controlled experiments. The seminar will cover the following topics:
• Models of societal transformations: Exploring frameworks from sociology, complexity science, and cultural evolution.
• The role of social movements in driving societal change: Discussing illustrative examples such as the fall of the German Democratic Republic and the environmental justice movement in the United States.
• Dynamics of social norm change: Understanding how norms evolve and how polarization can occur within societies.
• Shifts in social values: Examining changes in social values over time and their impact on institutions and behavior.
• Social structural change: Investigating how changes in social structures can lead to political backlash.
A cross-cutting theme will be the discussion of implications and strategies for sustainability transformations derived from the theoretical frameworks and empirical studies discussed.
