Title |
Cultures of Protest: Civil Disobedience in Belarus, Russia and Ukraine |
Description |
Demonstrations, strikes and protests are fundamental rights in democracies. In authoritarian regimes such as Belarus or Russia, they are often massively suppressed. The seminar will critically examine the analysis of protest cultures in the history of Eastern Europe, especially in recent decades, and using the examples of Belarus, Russia and Ukraine. It asks about forms of protest, the relationship between state and society, reporting, the role of civil society and concrete events around elections. The aim is to critically examine the contemporary history of Eastern Europe and to ask about spaces for political participation and repressive politics. Transnational interdependencies play an important role in this, as does the aspect of art as a form of civil disobedience.
