Title |
Stalinism: Causes, Dynamics and Life Worlds in a dictatorship |
Description |
Stalinism: this refers to Stalin's rule in the Soviet Union from the end of the 1920s until his death in 1953. The term stands for a dictatorship in which terror was perpetrated with the help of the NKVD secret service, millions of people were imprisoned in the Gulag, ethnic minorities were deported and life in the village was radically and brutally changed by the collectivization of agriculture. Who was Josef Stalin, what are the possible explanations for the tyranny, what was the path to the dictatorship and how did it affect society, culture, everyday life, politics and the economy? A dictatorship has many facets, including the mobilization of society. What was the relationship of Soviet citizens to their state at the time, and how did it change? Can one also speak of the "beautiful appearance of socialism"? How did the Second World War affect Stalinism, what happened in the years that followed?
