Title |
BA (MA) Theorie-/Wahlpflichtübung: Anthropology and Supply Chains |
Description |
Be aware: if you sign in for the course, you signed in for the exam!
With the disruptions of the Covid-19 pandemic and the war on Ukraine, supply chains have become prominent parts of public discourse in places like Switzerland. However, questions of supply have been of concern for somewhat longer. Where do the products in supermarkets or online shops come from? What traces do they leave on their way there?Who takes responsibility for these traces? From fair trade schemes to NGO campaigns, such questions have been productive in economic and political terms. Thereby, they have come to crucially shape the ways in which matters of justice in the global economy are posed and addressed.
In this course we will unpack supply chains from an anthropological perspective, that is as both political economic and cultural formations. Our premise will be that the concept is mainly a matter of perspective as it pictures global entanglements and relations along the lines of particular products. What are the promises and pitfalls of this perspective?Researchers in the social sciences and the humanities have addressed this question in both theoretical and empirical terms. In the first part of this course we will get to know how different (supply, commodity, value) chain researchers have conceptualized their object of study. In the second part we will follow a set of chains to different places in ethnographic case studies. Finally, we will come back to discuss the main question motivating this course: What can supply chains tell, or not, about global relations? |
