Title |
BA (MA) Sachbereichs-/Regionalübung: On Perceptions of the Environment: Classical and Contemporary Perspectives in Ecological Anthropology |
Description |
Be aware: if you sign in for the course, you signed in for the exam!
We will discuss classical as well as new literature from ecological anthropology on emic perceptions of and relations with the environment in hunter-gatherer, nomadic pastoralist and farming societies. In addition, we will discuss in concrete cases how local views are affected by colonial and post-colonial grabbing processes from extractivist and conservation capitalist processes and how this shapes perception of property and belonging also in the context of different ontologies. We will discuss what this debate on ontologically different environmental perception tells us to analyse relations of power on issues such as biodiversity loss, climate change and western driven notions of sustainability as framed in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the UN. In addition we will discuss alternative views of indigenous and local communities on how to address these global and local (‘glocal’) environmental issues. |
